Short Stories from Mahabharata: 5- Pandu's last wish

So we all know so far that, Pandu was the second son of Vichitravirya, who was anointed the king of Hastinapur, as his elder brother Dhritarashtra was blind and was considered unfit to rule. Pandu during his tenure expanded the boundaries of Hastinapur to entire Indian subcontinent and was called a world winner (Maha-pratapi). What very few know is that Pandu also acquired invoiable and intelligent sage-like qualities by multiple years of tapasya.

Pandu during one of his recreational trips with his wives Kunti and Madri; while hunting shot an arrow which killed sage Kindam while he was intimate with his wife. During his last breaths he cursed Pandu that if, he were to approach his wives with the intent of making love, he would die. Pandu was disheartened and left his kingdom to elder brother and came to reside permanently in forest while trying to do penance for his sins. On one fine day he was extremely attracted to his younger wife and queen, Madri and instantly died when he approached her with intentions of intimacy. By this time Pandu had fathered, all the 5 sons- 3 through Kunti and 2 through Madri. During list last breath he made his sons promise that they will consume a part of his corpse as this will make them party to his lerant wisdom and imbibe the fruits of his penance.

Young Pandavas, out of disgust dishonored this last wish of their dying father; except the youngest Pandava, Sehdev. Sahadev after everyone was sleep in the night, swolled his little finger as a whole. This act of Sehdev gave him all the intelligence and stoicism that he exhibited later in the story. He was the one along with Krishna who know what will lead to war and what will happen in the war and after. Yet he remained unperturbed and adopted nature of an observer where required and played his role as necessary. And hear most people think that the youngest Pandava was an mere accessory to the elder kins.
