Short Stories from Mahabharata: 10- Shikhandi & his purpose of life

Who was Shikhandi?
Remember, Amba, one of the three princesses, from Kashi kingdom, who were kidnapped by Bhisma for his brother Vichitravirya. Amba mentions that she is in love with the King of Salva Naresh and hence she is allowed to go to him from Hastinapur. The king of Salva later refuses to marry Amba as she is tainted. Amba now is heartbroken and comes back to Bhishma and asks him to marry her; but because of his oath he can't marry her. Amba now is furious and embarrassed and curses Bhishma that she will be the cause of his death, when time comes for that. And goes to her maternal grandfather, who suggested that she requests Lord Kartikeya. Amba worships Lord Kartikeya till he is happy and he hands Amba a garland of lotus and says whoever accepts it will kill Bhishma. She travels across country but no one agrees to accept the garland and hence Bhishma is not killed.  She approached Parasurama to give her justice. Parsuram invites Bhisma to flight him or accept Amba as his wife. They fight and unfortunately, Parsuram is defeated by his own student, Bhisma. Now Amba prays to Lord Shiva, who is happy with Amba and grants her the wish that, she will be the cause of Bhishma's death but she will have to take another birth for it. In order to speed up the process, she jumps in a fire pyre and ends her life.

She is reborn as Drupad's elder daughter, but Drupad wanted a son and he was promised by Shiva that he will have a son. Drupad is convinced that Lord Shiva will not lie to him, he raises his daughter as a son. The girl is named Shikandi ,who is taught all the skills of a warrior. Shikhandi was called a half man or women in Mahabharata in various places.

When the war is on and Bhisma is unconquered by anyone. He himself advises Arjun that he will be killed only when he brings a woman in front of him on the war field. It is then on the 10th day of Mahabharat Shikhandi rides with Arjun; who forces Bhisma to drop his weapons and as a result is he is  pierced by the arrows of Arjun.

Alternatively there is also a story that Shikhandi is married to a girl, who realizes that she is also married to a women. This becomes a huge issue and hence Drupad blames himself for this and runs to forest to commit suicide. he is then met with the king of Yakshas, Sthuna; who gifts his masculinity for a night. Hence he could satisfy his wife and perform his husband responsibilities.
